A Texas man convicted of sexual assault, Hai Vo, failed to appear in court for his sentencing, prompting concerns about his whereabouts.
Following a three-day trial and three hours of deliberation, a Travis County jury found Vo guilty of aggravated sexual assault, as announced by the Travis County District Attorney’s office on March 28. However, Vo was notably absent during his scheduled court proceeding the following day.
Despite prosecutors’ efforts to secure Vo’s detention post the guilty verdict, their request was denied. Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza expressed regret to the victim’s family for the delay in achieving justice in the case. He extended gratitude to the family for their cooperation throughout the legal proceedings and acknowledged the crucial assistance of law enforcement partners in securing the verdict.Vo’s conviction stemmed from the sexual assault of a 24-year-old disabled woman, which occurred after a Lunar New Year event in January 2020. Authorities became involved when the victim disclosed the assault to her mother, alleging that Vo, an acquaintance from church, had violated her trust.
Vo purportedly offered to drive her home but diverted to his residence, where he proceeded to engage in inappropriate behavior and sexually assault her while she changed clothes. Vo denied the assault allegations but admitted to encouraging the victim to change outfits
